Many back pain conditions have their origins located at a particular level in the spine. They usually involve a combination of contributing factors affecting the intervertebral discs, muscles and ligaments and the facet joints.

The three aims of the SPINA treatment programmes are to relieve back and neck pain by:

  • Promote an environment for improved disc health
  • Re-educate and rehabilitate supporting muscles and ligaments
  • Give patients the tools to continue making progress post-treatment
Back pain patient in vertical position on Accu Spina for pain reliefAt the heart of the SPINA Back Clinic treatments is Intervertebral Differential Dynamics Therapy or IDD Therapy spinal decompression on the Accu-SPINA device.

The Accu-SPINA is an FDA cleared Class II medical device which delivers the physical component required to decompress a targeted intervertebral disc or mobilise a spinal segment.

The Accu-SPINA enables the physiotherapist to improve mobility by increasing flexibility in muscles and reduce stiffness in ligaments. During treatment patients are completely relaxed, with many actually going to sleep.

When back pain becomes persistent, manual manipulations and traditional mechanical techniques may prove inadequate for your condition.  This is because such either they are not strong enough to have any effect or because they cannot be targeted at a particular level in the spine.

IDD Therapy treatment isolates a vertebral segment, back (lumbar L1-L5) or neck (cervical C1-C7) and distracts (draws apart) the vertebrae surrounding an injured disc by between 5 to 7 millimeters.

This distraction creates what is called a negative pressure in the disc  to promote the diffusion of fluid, nutrients and oxygen into the vertebral disc area to promote healing. IMPORTANT: Healing is performed by your body alone and we aim to create the optimum environment for efficient healing.

The first phase of treatment is a computer controlled distraction force targeted to the selected disc level. The Accu-SPINA uses distinct angles to manipulate a specific disc level with the whole programme precisely controlled by computer.  This is what sets the Accu-SPINA apart from traditional devices.

The second important phase of treatment is oscillation, which is unique to the Accu-SPINA, and is controlled by computer software.  Typical muscle guarding or spasm and strain may be significantly reduced by the oscillation feature.

Additional physiotherapy tools are used to create the optimum environment for pain relief, healing and rehabilitation. These include heat, massage and TENS where necessary as well as specific exercises. For more information, please see the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) section.
